Background

The Eastern & Southern Africa Vice Presidential Unit (AFE) is one of the World Bank’s regional VPUs, responsible for advancing development across 26 countries in the region. The AFE VPU is led by Regional Vice President Ndiamé Diop (as of May 2025), who oversees a portfolio of nearly 400 projects valued at over $76 billion. The VPU’s work spans analytical research, technical assistance, and policy advice, with a strong focus on job creation, energy access, digital connectivity, regional integration, health, water and sanitation, and education all aimed at poverty reduction and economic transformation. Unit Description

The VPU’s work spans analytical research, technical assistance, and policy advice, with a strong focus on job creation, energy access, digital connectivity, regional integration, health, water and sanitation, and education all aimed at poverty reduction and economic transformation.

Duties and accountabilities

  • Assist in the planning and coordination of events, including workshops, conferences, and meetings. 
  • Coordinate logistics for team events, including scheduling and correspondence related to stakeholder outreach  
  • Assisting the team with producing reports, presentations, and official communications. 
  • Design e-newsletter template compatible with the WBG System; collect, draft and publish stories 
  • Provide technical backstopping to track and analyze current events, political developments 
  • Contribute to communications activities with relevant colleagues within the CMU  
  • Undertake other tasks assigned. 

Selection Criteria

  • Masters’ degree or currently enrolled in a graduate degree in communications, business, international relations, or program in fields related to the World Bank's work and at least 3 years of relevant experience.  
  • Demonstrated analytical thinking, communication, and research skills. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. 
  • Proficiency in office software programs, online communication, social media, and research tools. 
  • Document and graphic design skills are considered an asset. 
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work under pressure. 
  • Ability to thrive in a multi-cultural environment and work effectively in a team. 
  • Experience with graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) is an advantage.
