Who we are

SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. We started our humanitarian work in Ethiopia with the opening of our first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. Since then, we have expanded our programs to different regions where there are significant needs for intervention and where we believe we can work in partnership with all relevant actors to bring sustainable positive outcomes for children’s and young people.

Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and those that are at risk of losing their parental care. Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community-based organizations across eight program locations; we aspire that every child grows up with love, respect and security.

Join Our Mission:

SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia, an international non-governmental organization committed to providing love, respect, and security to children who have lost parental care or are at risk of losing it, is seeking a qualified training institution to conduct a Financial Leadership Training for Non-Finance Managers and Coordinators for our Addis Ababa Program Location staffs. This training program aims to empower non-financial leaders with the essential skills to interpret financial statements, manage project budgets effectively, ensure compliance with organizational policies and donor regulations, and foster a culture of accountability and efficient resource utilization to support our humanitarian mission.

Background and Rationale

Financial decisions are the bedrock of operational success in the nonprofit sector. For managers and coordinators at SOS Children’s Villages, the ability to bridge the gap between programmatic goals and financial reality is essential. Research indicates that organizations with financially literate managers experience significantly higher operational efficiency and improved compliance. This training aims to demystify financial data, transforming it into actionable insights that support the welfare of the children and families we serve.

Training Content and Objectives

The program objective is to equip participants with the skills to interpret financial statements, manage budgets, and make informed, strategic decisions. Participants will learn to speak the "language of finance," enabling them to communicate effectively with finance departments and ensure that every resource is aligned with organizational strategy.

Core Training Modules

  • A. Budget Planning and Effective Cost Control: Managers will learn to move beyond simple line-item tracking to strategic budget development. This includes understanding the relationship between operational activities and financial outcomes. Participants will explore techniques for cost-benefit analysis and variance analysis, expressed as:
Effective control involves implementing internal checks to ensure that resources are utilized efficiently without compromising program quality.
  • B. Financial Risk Management: This module addresses the identification and mitigation of financial risks within the NGO sector. Managers will learn to assess liquidity risks, currency fluctuations, and the risks associated with fund misappropriation. The focus is on establishing a culture of accountability and internal control frameworks that protect the organization’s assets.
  • C. Grant Financial Compliance: Navigating the complexities of donor requirements, ensuring transparent reporting, and maintaining audit readiness.
  • D. Interpreting Financial Reports for Decision-Making: Participants will be trained to read and interpret the Statement of Financial Position (Balance Sheet) and the Statement of Activities (Income Statement). The training will emphasize how to use these reports to make informed decisions, such as reallocating resources mid-year or scaling up successful interventions based on financial performance indicators.

Expected Outcomes

Participants will gain the confidence to prepare budgets, compute key performance indicators (KPIs), and apply management accounting techniques. The ultimate goal is to foster a culture of financial accountability that directly enhances the impact of our programs.

Methodology

The training will utilize a "Do-Review-Learn-Apply" model, featuring:

  • Interactive workshops and group discussions.
  • Practical simulations of real-world financial scenarios.
  • Capstone case studies relevant to the nonprofit sector.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Progress will be tracked through pre- and post-training assessments, participant feedback, and a final evaluation of the capstone project to ensure the practical application of concepts.
